English Grammar

It’s been a long time since I sat in a classroom but I really can’t remember being taught English grammar. This is because government policy at the time was not to teach it, and so parents who were educated in the 1970s and 1980s were generally not taught grammar in school.
Whether or not to teach grammar seems to be an on-going debate amongst academics and the question is often raised by parents who home school their children. As we learned the rules of our language unconsciously, we’re now unable to explain the ‘why’ and ‘when’ of word endings and sentence structures, and are struggling to help our children at home.
However, as grammar now stands as one of the key features of the current National Curriculum we need to build a positive attitude towards its leaning and value. There’s no doubt that if grammar is used poorly, it can result in messages being unclear, whereas correct grammar makes listening and reading easier and communications more enjoyable.
So let’s embrace our language with all its crazy rules and exceptions. Let’s learn alongside our children with the help of Good2Learn! There are lessons added all the time but currently in the grammar category you can find the following. Happy learning!
