Within Key stage 2 English, your child will be introduced to Figurative Language. This will add a new dimension to their writing and give them the tools they need to do more than just re-tell a story. The addition of Figurative Language allows your young writer to appeal to their reader’s sense of humour and imagination by creating mental pictures with words. It can transform ordinary events into the extraordinary by enhancing emotions and awakening senses.
In our featured lesson today, Jack explains how and when we can use ‘Smilies and Metaphors’ as a way of comparing two things or two ideas. As a quick summary: a simile is a comparison between two things that uses the word like or as: As sly as a fox, whereas a metaphor is a direct comparison between two things that does not use like or as: He’s a real fox!
Why not watch the lesson along with your child and see if you can remember which is which! Also have a look at some other Good2Learn Figurative Language lessons such as Personification, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration, Sibilance and Assonance and Hyperbole. Happy writing!
